Chapter twelve

International Pursuit - Athens

Chris

“It can’t be done, Mahmoud. We can’t break the code. If indeed this is Akhenaten’s tomb, he made sure no one can get in.” Professor Donovan looked frustrated. “There’s just something, Evie. I seem to be missing something.”

“Donovan, we have to find the truth. It is no longer a secret that the tomb of Akhenaten may have been found. Ibrahim and others like him will definitely be back for whatever they can loot. And you know the black market will soon go mad with offers to buy the elixir. We have to protect it.”

“I know, I know. Then why don’t we leave it alone? If we can’t get in, then most likely neither can anyone else.”

“They’ll just break their way in.”

I’d been listening to their conversation, thinking to myself that we have, in fact, found the artifact and Professor Donovan It would be a good idea to return home now.

Evie, on the other hand, had other plans. I released a soft groan as I watched her hurry across the room toward Donovan and Mahmoud.

When the men had woken up and found Evie and me without our ropes and the remnants of dates between us, Mahmoud had hit his forehead and asked them to leave us untied.

“We can get the answer in Athen.”

“What?” we all said at the same time.

“Evie, are you insane?” I marched across the room and gripped her by the elbow. “We should be getting back to America, not thinking of going to another country.”

Evie turned to me. “Chris, I told you I can’t stop until I find out the truth. Now, Mahmoud, if you can just give me a few days to get to Athens, I may be able to find the meaning of these symbols.”

She turned to me. “Chris, you don’t have to feel any obligation to go. Of course, if you came with me I’d feel safer, but you really don’t have to. I know you have your job and stuff back at home.”

“She’s going, and so is he.”

“Wait a minute. Who are you to give me orders?”

“Do you plan to leave your woman to face danger alone?”

Without waiting for an answer, he called one of the men. “Drive them back to their hotel.” He turned to us and said, “Seven days. I give you seven days. We will remain here and await your return.”

Evie jumped then hugged me. I shook my head and pulled her by the hand toward the exit.

During the drive to the hotel, Evie couldn’t contain her excitement at going to Athens. She kissed me loudly and giggled like she was a little girl that had just been given a doll house.

“Evie, we have to learn to calm down and think things through. We can’t just get up and leave for another country on an impulse.”

“Oh, but it’s not an impulse, Chris. The artifact was first found in Athens. We’re simply following the history to unearth the truth.” She squeezed my hand.

I’d never seen anyone so excited to go into danger.
